Artwork, Creativity and Artificial Intelligence: What will design be in the future?

Having AI creating artwork and design was always inevitable. You can program a computer to do just about anything. It can analyze, run through scenarios, and execute the most optimal plan. Settings could be tweaked to alter the outcome to make it seem randomized.

How much do we value emotion and thought? How much do we value the act of someone spending time, thinking about things, and having empathy for others in that situation? Is that important?

AI is the sum of how the machine was taught to think. It doesn’t take into account how the machine feels, but rather how the creator felt when coding that algorithm. It’s a series of if/then statements that works to create a hypothesis and a viewpoint that is not based in emotion, but rather what the machine thinks the emotion should be in a certain situation.

What is important to you? Do you care if the lines on a page or brush strokes were created by a machine or a person? Is it how YOU feel in response, or the collective experience of both you and the creator?

For some, having a handmade, HUMANmade *something* will be important and valuable. For others, they will only care about the end result. I suspect the act of *making* something will end up being the commodity rather than the actual outcome. Watching someone make something, watching that creative process, and being able to experience that portion of the work will become “art”. The finished piece will be an artifact and a byproduct of doing “art”.

Should artists and designers be afraid? I don’t think so. If we look at the trends, it’s clear artists and designers aren’t appreciated by non-creatives in the first place. Art and design have always been subjective, with the value being determined by those who get to experience it. What’s the difference between AI placing elements from a design system together to create a design and a person doing the same thing? It’s the act of creating that design system in the first place where the creativity and thought happens. You can teach anyone to utilize a design system, but it takes the vision and creativity to create it in the first place.

I suspect that act of creating, the thing that is then replicated and is the basis for the AI, is where the new design will live and will continue to be valuable… at least for now. At least until the AI starts to lead and tell us how to think.

And that is another issue onto itself.
